What is Sinker EDM?
At Graphel Carbon Products, we manufacture custom graphite electrodes for EDM operations. EDM stands for Electrical Discharge Machining. In sinker EDM, a custom tool-electrode (often known as just the electrode) approaches the workpiece-electrode (often known as just the workpiece) and a series of sparks between the electrode and the workpiece, known as EDM pulses, removes material from the workpiece, so that the electrode creates a desired shape in the workpiece. Below are some examples of Sinker EDM Electrodes, which will create the desired opposite shape in the workpiece.
How Does EDM Work?
EDM machining is considered by most to be a thermal removal process. The most convincing support for this claim is the removal of material from the electrodes by melting and/or vaporization by a thermal process, along with pressure dynamics established in the spark-gap. The spark gap generates an electrical force on the surface of the electrode that removes material. This material is “flushed” away so the spark gap is free of contamination. The Sinker EDM Machine pushes the electrode, held in by precision tooling, down for more EDM Pulses to continue making its shape in the workpiece.
